Superfoods: To The Rescue!

Superfoods. They are all the rave in the news these days. From womens fitness magazines covers to popular television shows, to the worlds best selling weight loss supplements, foods being dubbed “super” are in the headlines every other day it seems. With claims that they are affordable, accessible, and many ready to eat with no cooking involved this almost seems too good to be true. Are they really all they are cracked up to be? What is a “Superfood” and what exactly makes it so super anyways? Superfoods are extremely healthy foods that contain above-average concentrations of essential vitamins and minerals. Entire new diets have been built upon ingesting predominantly super foods such as Garlic, Tumeric, Goji Berries, Kale, Mangosteen, Maca, Blueberries, Broccoli, Green Coffee and the list goes on and on! Although many people remain unaware of more common superfoods at the grocery store or health food store, many are in fact affordable and can be purchased locally or online at little cost compared to benefit for the consumer. The following 5 foods are considered among the most accessible super foods you can buy.

1) Garlic:

Garlic is one of the earliest know super foods that were used even by the Egyptians of Pyramid age. The disease-fighting capability of garlic was thought to be evident to the Egyptians from the very fact that garlic plant is least affected by pests. Garlic as a food is rich in anti-oxidants which helps in destroying the free radicals. The anti-oxidants in garlic as such neutralize the free radicals and reduce the damage caused by them over time. Garlic has been a well known folk remedy best for effecting cholesterol and thereby thought by many ancient peoples to keep your heart a healthy and strong. To the ancients garlic was worth its weight in Gold. And today we know why: The powerful anti-oxidants available in garlic helps boost immunity and add to an overall healthy lifestyle through good nutrition. Some swear by it for weight loss and cutting belly fat in particular, though this has not been scientifically conclusive or proven in any way. So while we dont recommend Garlic for fast weight loss we do recommend it for an over all must add superfood for a nutritional best practice!

2) Broccoli:

Broccoli is a super food that comes under dark green vegetables. For a vegetarian diet this is a must have diet staple! Even known to the earliest ones in the Roman Empire as a food of the gods, broccoli is popularized as one of the best anti-cancer food even now. The high dietary fiber and the Vitamin C and phosphate available in broccoli make it a precious food never to be avoided. It is packed with Carotenoids, Lutein and other multiple nutrients which are potent for over all health and vitality, especially for maintaining nutrient balances. One Celeb doc Says that he eats it daily as part of his healthy living diet. The high fiber in broccoli makes it a heart healthy food as well. Its a MiracIe that any of of stayed healthy when we wouldnt listen to mom and eat our broccoli!

3) Kale:

Kale, aka borecole, is one of the healthiest vegetables on the planet. A leafy green, kale is available in curly, ornamental, or dinosaur varieties. It belongs to the Brassica family that includes cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, collards, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts. What makes kale so exceptional? Here is why it’s a superstar vegetable — and ways to work it into your diet. There is no fat in kale. Some ask how to burn belly fat without exercise. This is the wrong question! How can i avoid getting belly fat and maintain my ideal weight is the right one. So while this isnt necessarily one of the fat burning foods, it is a non fat alternative to many other snacks. A little known fun fun fact about kale is that in the Wizard of Oz Dorothy can be seen on one portion of the yellow brick road with kale plants in the background, likely because they are considered a plant with many health benefits, and we all know every thing is better in Oz (wink wink)! Kale’s health benefits are primarily linked to its high fiber and low calorie density and the high concentration and excellent source of antioxidant vitamins A, C, and K — and sulphur-containing phytonutrients.Kale might be a powerhouse of nutrients but is also contains oxalates, naturally occurring substances that can interfere with the absorption of calcium. Avoid eating calcium-rich foods like dairy at the same time as kale to prevent any problems.

4) Blueberries:

Blueberries are considered as a top super fruit in the world. Pound for pound they stack up in nutrient density against even the mightiest of veggies. Blueberries are naturally fat free so if you arent ingesting fat you wont have to burn fat later! Plus the presence of anthocyanin, the factor responsible for its blue color makes it the best antioxidant berry ever available. It helps to fight the free radicals by trapping them in the blood via plasmic binding, which some believe helps delay the degeneration process & prevent premature ageing. Blueberries being a rich source of Vitamins, Zinc, Sodium and Potassium, old timers believe it acts as a good brain tonic and a memory booster. Enriched with dietary fiber, it may help lower the bad cholesterol and reduce the cardio vascular risks for some. Being a food rich in Vitamin C blueberries boosts the immunity which prevents infection.

5) Sweet potato:

What local market doesn’t have these? Sweet potato, which is no potato at all actually, the tuberous root is its name, is well known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. On contrary to its name as a ‘potato’ it is a boon for the diabetics, as it is a low GI food which is commonly known by diabetics and hypoglycemics for helping regulate the blood sugar levels. So while mom would melt fat and throw sugar in a pan and make candied yams out of these around the holidays, there are far healthier ways to sneak these into your diet. Also it contains Vitamin A which adds to its benefit as a good food for ocular health.
